There is very little information about biography of the artist. Vladimir Kazantsev finished gymnasium in Ekaterinburg, studied at the faculty of law in Moscow University in late 1860s — early 1870s. In 1871–1874 he worked as a candidate for a position of investigator. At the same time he was engaged in painting and drawing.

In 1880–1884 he attended the Imperial Academy of Arts (IAKh) as a noncredit student. In 1882 he was awarded small incentive medal for his drawing Birch grove in autumn and big incentive medal for his painting. In 1883 Kazantsev was allowed to represent his painting for trip abroad, but unsuccessfully. In 1884 he was conferred title of non-class (free) artist of the 2nd degree (specialization in landscape painting). In 1891 Kazantsev was conferred title of class artist of the 1st degree; in 1894 he was elected academician.

Kazantsev worked as a landscape painter, took part in a lot of academician exhibitions (since 1883) in St. Petersburg, Berlin, Odessa, Kharkov, Ekaterinburg, Kazan.

Works by Vladimir Kazantsev are in many private and museum collections, including Irkutsk Regional Art Museum named after V. P. Sukachev.
