Original art education was in the studio AO Karelin in Nizhny Novgorod (1900-1908). In 1908 he arrived in St. Petersburg, where he enrolled in the Forest Institute (1908-1911). Attended School of Drawing Society for the Encouragement of Arts (1913), where he studied under the guidance of Nicholas Roerich and AA Rylova; studio VA Zverev (1913-1915); took private lessons with Pavel Chistyakov.

lived in Moscow. Participated in exhibitions of the Association of Independent in St. Petersburg, one of the founding member and exhibitor AHRR - AChRs (1924, 1926, 1929), the head of "production office" of the Association. Held a personal exhibition in Moscow (1964).

Besides artistic activities, was engaged in museum work: in 1920-1928 served as Director of the Central handicraft museum of the Supreme Council of National Economy in 1932-1937 - director of the State Tretyakov Gallery. Author of several articles on museum studies. He was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR and Honored Artist of the RSFSR.
