Studied at MUZHVZ (end of 1870 - 1882), where he taught Vasily Perov, ES Sorokin, AK Savrasov, then - in IAH (1882-1885), in a class of historical painting by Pavel Chistyakov. During the period of study took all the existing awards: two small silver medals (in MUZHVZ) in 1883 - two large silver medals and a greater incentive, in 1884 - a small gold medal for the program "Apollo and Hyacinthus wounded" in 1885 - more gold medal for the painting "Ovchaya font"; graduated from the course with the title of class artist 1-th degree and the right of a pensioner's travel abroad for four years.

In 1886-1890 - pensioner IAH in Italy, visited Paris, Berlin, Cologne. In 1890 "for art and excellent knowledge of historical painting was awarded the title of academician. In January 1891 appointed a supernumerary Associate Professor IAH, but the office has not entered into the departure in December 1890 in Moscow. In 1895 he received from the IAH certificate for teaching painting and drawing in secondary schools.

lived in Moscow (1890-1901), Paris (1901-1903), St. Petersburg - Petrograd (1904-1918). He worked in the field of easel and monumental painting, creating songs on the historic and evangelical scenes, painted landscapes, portraits, genre paintings of content. Since 1880 - participant of exhibitions (student's, MUZHVZ). Exhibited his works at exhibitions in the halls of IAH (1886-1918, with interruptions), the Moscow Society of Lovers of Fine Arts (1894-1913, with interruptions), TPHV (1898-1900), the Moscow Association of Artists (1899, 1903), the exhibition of art in the industry Lemercier Gallery in Moscow (1915-1916) and others.

At the end of 1880 became friendly with EG and Mamontov. From 1890 - participant Abramtsevo artistic circle. He painted landscapes Abramtzevo and its surroundings, the interiors of the manor house, portraits of the owners and guests of the estate, he worked in Abramtsevo ceramic workshop. In 1899, accompanied VD Polenov a journey to the East, visited Constantinople, Piraeus, Alexandria, Cairo, Jerusalem. In 1901, together with M. Voloshin went to Paris, in the same year with him and ES Kruglikova undertook a trip through the Pyrenees mountain pass to Spain and returned to Paris, where he lived until 1903 .

in 1911-1912 participated in a mural in the church of St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia.
