born in the family of a craftsman. Original art education was led by F. Stern - drawing teacher at the High School Provincial Ahrensburg. In 1858 worked in the sculpture studio of Professor DI Jensen in St. Petersburg. He continued his education at IAH (1858-1862) in a class of landscape painting by SM Vorobiev. During the years of study took all existing academic awards: in 1859 - a small silver medal in 1860 - a large silver medal in 1861 - a small gold medal for the scenery "Lifland species" in 1862 - a gold medal for the two landscapes " Lifliandskii species "and now" The oak forest in the vicinity of Revel. In the same year, released from the Academy with the rank of class artist of degree 1 and the right to a pensioner's trip abroad for six years.
