In 1863, together with his parents moved to St. Petersburg, continued his education in the Pavlovsk Military School (1863-1864) and in the Mikhailovsky Artillery School (1864), which finished among the top students. In 1867-1870 he studied at the Mikhailovsky Artillery Academy. Since 1870 directed punch workshop at the St. Petersburg munitions plant. In 1892 he retired with the rank of Major General.

In 1885 he purchased the estate in Kislovodsk, lived there in the summer and autumn.

Yaroshenko - the greatest masters of genre painting in Russia in the second half of the XIX century, one of the ideologues and active participants TPHV. His creativity inherent in critical areas, democracy, the desire to talk about the advanced social and ethical ideals of his era. In the pictures created a collective image of workers, students, revolutionary intellectuals, the first among Russian painters turned to the factory topics ( "Fireman", 1878). Many worked in the genre of portraiture, creating a gallery of images of representatives of national culture - Leo Tolstoy, Nikolai Ge, VG Korolenko, VS . Solovyov, PA Strepetova and others.
