Studied on medical, then — philosophical faculties of the University of Bern (about 1904 — 1906). Art education has received in St. Petersburg in the School С. С. Егорнова (1906-1907), School Е. Н. Званцевой (1908-1910) Л. С. Бакста, М. В. Добужинского, К. С. Петрова-Водкина; in Paris, at М. Бланш and Ш. Герена (1910-1911), he studied the technique of etching under the guidance of Е. С. Кругликовой. Preparing to enter the Higher art school of painting, sculpture and architecture under the Imperial Academy of arts (the plans were not realized).

In 1910-е I lived in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Paris; from 1919 — in Petrograd (Leningrad). Was married to the philosopher И. Ш. Розенфельдом (1905-1906, officially divorced about 1910), 1907-1914 — civil wife А. Н. Толстого (she devoted a number of his poems); in the second half of 1910-х — ally and lover В. Е. Татлина with 1921 — married to a German architect-коммунистом Г. Пессати. Was intimately familiar with М. З. Шагалом, Е. С. Кругликовой, С. Ю. Судейкиным, Н. Н. Сапуновым, М. С. Сарьяном, Н. Д. Милиоти, Г. Б. Якуловым, А. В. Лентуловым, М. А. Волошиным, К. В. Кандауровым and other prominent representatives of the artistic life of Moscow and St. Petersburg 1910-х.

In 1910-е he painted mainly still lifes; from the mid 1910-х performed abstract reliefs (glass, steel, oil), collage, abstract and semi-abstract pictorial composition. In 1917, together with А. М. Родченко and Н. А. Удальцовой created paintings of Petrograd café pittoresque (based on sketches Г. Б. Якулова). Participated in the creation of the "Monument to the III international" В. Е. Татлина (1920). 1920-х performed propaganda posters in the technique of painting on glass ("Peace to the cottages — war on the palaces", "the Basis of the RSFSR — Labor", "workers of all countries unite!", all — between 1919 and 1921). 1930-х created thematic compositions, landscapes, portraits; worked a lot in watercolors. Author paintings: "Aquarium" (1915), "Circus (texture task)" (1921), "Worker-агитатор" (1931), "village President Daria Prokhorova" (1934), "the Chairman of the II Congress of collective farmers-ударников Е. С. Федорова" (1935-1938), "Gardener farm "Revival" В. Коновалова" (1936), "life has become easier, life has become merrier" (the end of 1930-х), "still life. Spring" (1950).

After the October revolution along with В. Е. Татлиным participated in the organization of the Moscow Board on Affairs of ARTS at the people's Commissariat; from April 1918 —, the Secretary of the Department EVERY people's Commissariat, member of the all-Russian exhibition Department at the people's Commissariat, head of the publishing section of the art Department FROM the people's Commissariat (1920-е). Member of the editorial Board of the journal "international art" (1919; released single room). Participated in the creation of the Museum of artistic culture in Petrograd (1921). Deputy head of the section of painting of Serbia (all-Russian Union of art workers; the late 1920-х). Headed art departments of magazines "Worker" and "Peasant" (1925-1935).

Since the early 1910 — participant of exhibitions (apparently, 6-я exhibition of the magazine "Apollo" — exhibition of works of pupils and students Л. С. Бакста and М. В. Добужинского, 1910, St-Петербург). Participated in exhibitions of Association: "the World of art" (1912, 1913, 1915, 1917), "the Jack of diamonds" (1913) in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Member of Association: "Freedom of art" (1917), "Art and Revolution" (1917; founder), "On revolution" (1917; founder). He exposed his works at exhibitions: paintings 1915 года (1915), Store (1916) in Moscow; "the society of new tendencies in art" (1922), of paintings by Petrograd artists of all directions (1923), "Woman in socialist construction" (1934), 1-й exhibition of Leningrad artists (1935), autumn exhibitions of Leningrad artists (1936, 1956, 1958, 1959) in Petrograd (Leningrad); the XIV international art exhibition in Venice (1924) and others. Member LOSH (1932).

as an assistant-ассистента В. Е. Татлина taught in 2-х State free art studios in Moscow (1918).
