From the family of hereditary painters; brother of the artist А. Н. Буторина. Studied in educational workshops of the Committee of guardianship of Russian icon painting in Palekh (1902-1906). In 1906-1917 worked in St. Petersburg in the icon-painting Studio of his uncle А. Е. Одинцова. Member of the Civil war (1918-1922).

After demobilization, he returned to Palekh. 1925 — member of the Artel of ancient painting in Palekh. Painted articles made of papier-маше (boxes, cartons, compacts, boxes, reservoirs, plates) in literature, folklore, domestic and historical scenes, the Soviet theme: "the Fight" (1925), "long live the Red Army!" (1926), "Danko" (1926), "the Battle" (1926), "At the curved seashore" (1926; prize at the world exhibition in Paris 1937), "the Peoples of the USSR" (1928), "Death Chapaev" (1931), "Turnip", "the old Woman izergil" (1932), "don-Кихот" (1933), "Pushkin in St. Michael" (1934), "the Partisans of the Smolensk region" (1942), "Our homeland — invincible" (1943), "Ivan the terrible Reval" (1945), "Budenovsky" (1948), "journey beyond three seas" (1959).

Participated in the decoration of palaces of young pioneers in Leningrad (1936), Sverdlovsk (1937), Smith (1938), Yaroslavl (1939); restoration of the exterior frescoes of the assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin (1946).

Created the illustrations for the book: "Starukha" А. М. Горького (1937), "dawn-солнышко" М. С. Крюковой (1939), "journey beyond three seas of Athanasius Nikitin as 1466-1472" (1960, together with Б. М. Немтиновым).

From 1928 — participant of exhibitions (exhibition of works of art to 10-летнему the anniversary of the October revolution in Moscow). A member of the Union of artists of the USSR (from 1934). Participated in exhibitions: works of Palekh Artel of ancient painting (1930), "XV years of the red army" (1933), "Russian folk art" (1950-1958) in Leningrad,;, "Art of Palekh" (1932), "Russian lacquer art" (1933), folk art (1937), all-Union art exhibitions (1942/1943 — "Great Patriotic war; 1943/1944 — "Heroic front and rear"; 1947), "А. С. Пушкин in the works of artists of the RSFSR" (1949), Republican exhibitions of artists of the RSFSR (1949, 1957), the Republican exhibition of works of folk-прикладного art and art industry of the RSFSR (1952), "30 лет art of the Soviet Palekh" (1955) in Moscow; Regional art exhibitions in Ivanovo (1936, 1947, 1952); "Volga — Russian river" (1946), "the Soviet theme in the art of Palekh" (1958) in Palekh. Works also exhibited at the world exhibition in Paris (1937), exhibition of works of folk and industrial art of the RSFSR in Rudnev (Hungary, 1958).

he Taught at the Palekh vocational school (1930-1934), the Palekh art school (1934-1960). Honored art worker of the RSFSR (1956).

Work is represented in many Museum collections, among them the State Tretyakov gallery, the Museum of decorative-прикладного and folk art, State Russian Museum, Russian Museum А. С. Пушкина, Ivanovo regional art Museum, State Museum of Palekh art in Palekh.
