From the family of hereditary painters; brother of the miniaturist Г. М. Баканова uncle of the artist А. Г. Баканова. Art education in the icon workshop Н. М. Сафонова (1880-1886) the master В. А. Беляева. From 1887 he worked as a painter in the workshop Н. М. Сафонова; participated in the restoration of paintings of the Annunciation Cathedral the faceted chamber in the Moscow Kremlin, the Novodevichy monastery in Moscow, as well as the Dukes in Kostroma, churches of Novgorod and Vladimir. In 1891-1895 находился in military service.

Lived in Palekh. One of the founders of the Palekh school of miniature painting on lacquer. Participated in the creation of Palekh artel of ancient painting (1924). Executed miniatures on papier-маше (boxes, cartons, compacts, brooches, plates, panels) on Soviet, folk and literary stories: "Goldilocks" (1923), "Sowing" (1924), "demonstration Lady" (1924), "the Shepherd boy" (1925), "Hut-читальня" (1925), "Stepan Razin" (1925), "Threshing" (1926), "Demonstration" (1927), "do Not Wake me young" (1929), "Khokhloma artists at work" (1929), "the Fly" (1930), "Reconstruction of agriculture" (1930), "Runaround" (1931), "Iron stream" (1931, based on the novel by А. С. Серафимовича), "the fountain of Bakhchisarai" (1930-1932, several variants), "Ruslan and Lyudmila" (1933), "the Tale of the Golden Cockerel" (1934) А. С. Пушкину.

Engaged in book illustration; has issued the book "the tale of the dead Princess and the seven knights" А. С. Пушкина (1936-1937), and others. Executed painting on porcelain.

From 1924 — participated in exhibitions. Exhibited: art works for 10-летнему the anniversary of the October revolution (1928), "the Art of Palekh" (1932), "XV years of the red army" (1933), "Russian lacquer art" (1933) in Moscow; 2-й regional art exhibition "Ivanovo industrial oblast in art" in Ivanovo (1935). Participant of several international exhibitions: XIV International art exhibition in Venice (1924, diploma 1-й degree), International exhibition art-декоративных arts in Paris (1925, honorary diploma).
