From a noble family; the son of an official of the Ministry of Finance. Studied in MUZHVZ (1904-1909) С. А. Коровина, Л. О. Пастернака; as a volunteer at the Moscow archaeological Institute (since 1911).

he Lived in Moscow. In 1908, he published in literary magazines poetry, critical and theoretical work. Worked in the magazine "Russian archive". Participated in the all-Russian Congress of artists (1912), where he read a paper "On the latest trends in Russian painting". Member of literary circle "Lyrics" (1913-1914); one of the founders, leader and theorist of the futurist group "Centrifuge" (1914-1917).

In literature under various pseudonyms. Published poetry collections "Vertogradari above the vines" (1913), "Almazova woods" (1917), "Lira Lira" (1917; arrange cover). Performed a cover image futuristic anthology "Ryong" (1914).

After the October revolution worked in the literary Department Narcompros, then — in the Central statistical office, the state planning Committee. Published novels: "the revolt of the misanthropes" (1922), "Specification of edicola" (1923), "the Finder of treasure" (1931).

In the early 1930-х was arrested in 1934, exiled to Kokchetav in Kazakhstan. After the return from exile has released scientific-популярные books for students: "the Magic durag" (1949), "Archimedean solid summer" (1959); the author of the autobiographical novel "the Boy" (1966), the poem "Eugene Delacroix. A painter" (1971). And actively engaged in poetic translation. Completed translations: "Caesar and Cleopatra", "the House of broken hearts" Б. Шоу, "Red and black" Stendhal, "Drunken boat" А. Рембо "Song of Roland" and others.

Work is represented in several Museum collections, among them — of the State Tretyakov gallery; the archive is located in the Russian state archive of literature and art.
