Painter, draftsman

From the family of a music teacher, organist and violinist of the Lutheran Church of St. Nicholas in revel. Brother of the painter Karl Venig; uncle of Alexandre, Gregory, Paul Unigov. In 1848 together with his family moved to St. Petersburg. He studied at the Imperial Academy of arts (1851-1863) in the class of historical painting in Ф. А. Бруни. For student work awarded to small (1854, 1856, 1857) and large (1856, 1857) silver medals. In 1859 the program "Scene of the Olympic games" received a small gold medal. Several times participated in competition on receiving a large gold medal with the programs: "the Grand Duchess Sophia Vitovtovna at the wedding of Vasily the blind (the Grand Duchess Sophia Vitovtovna pulls the belt from Prince Vasili Squint at the wedding of Vasily II the Dark)" (1861), "Tsarina Natalya Kirillovna with children in front of the archers (Streltsy rebellion)" (1862), "the Kiss of Judas (Kiss of Judas)" (1862). In 1863 he participated in the Revolt of Fourteen, defiantly refusing to compete for a gold medal; out of the Imperial Academy of arts with the title of class artist of 2-й degree (1864).

Lived in St. Petersburg. Historical painter, portraitist. A member of the St.-Петербургской Artel of artists. As assistant И. Н. Крамского participated in painting the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow (1865).

Participated in the exhibitions of the Imperial Academy of arts (1861, 1862, 1869, 1872).

Work is represented in several Museum collections, among them — of the State Russian Museum, Science-исследовательский Museum of the Russian Academy of arts.
