From a noble family. Consisted volnoprihodyaschim student of Drawing school of Society for encouragement of arts (1847-1848), also studied at the Imperial law school (he graduated in 1851).

Lived in St. Petersburg. In may 1857 he made a trip to Germany. He served in the office of I the office 5-го Department of the Senate as the assistant Secretary (since 1851) 1861 — senior Secretary. Councillor of state. In 1879-1881 —, the overseer of the departments of the expedition of storing state papers in the Ministry of Finance.

in Parallel with the service was engaged in painting, drawing, mastered the technique of etching. A landscape painter. A member of the St.-Петербургской artel of artists (beginning 1870-х), member-учредитель the society of Russian aquafortistes (1871).

Work is represented in several Museum collections, among them — of the State Tretyakov gallery.
