he Studied at the University of Cambridge. In 1850 he came to Russia. Lived in St. Petersburg and Pavlovsk. In 1856-1878, he taught English language and literature in the Imperial Alexander Lyceum and the Naval Academy, and in 1877 entered the service of the Imperial court. He retired with the rank of state Councilor.

was in relationship with Mordvinova (father-in-law А. А. Мордвинова outhouse-адьютанта Nicholas II) and a distant relative of the Benois family (he was married to the sister of the wife of Jules Benois). Was familiar with Л. Н. Толстым.

Н. Бенуа; according to the memoirs of Alexander Benois contributed to the development of a career senior brother: in 1883 показал watercolor albert Benois Alexander III and Maria Alexandrovna. Member of the society of Russian watercolors.

In 1901, the Society of Russian watercolorists was held posthumous exhibition of the artist.

Work is represented in several Museum collections, including the State Russian Museum.
