Painter

the Illegitimate son of the landowner А. П. Елагина; the brother of watercolourist, draughtsman and lithographer В. А. Агина. He studied at the Imperial Academy of arts (1834-1839), from 1836 — in the class of historical painting in К. П. Брюллова. The pensioner Society for the promotion of artists (OPKh). In 1839 he obtained the title of teacher of drawing.

Lived in St. Petersburg since 1853 — Kiev. The first signature works belong to 1841 году. By order of the St. Petersburg society of artists worked on the illustrations for the edition "the old Testament in pictures" (1839-1845; engraved К. Я. Афанасьевым). Performed genre, satirical drawings, portraits for magazines "Art newspaper" (1841), "Literary newspaper" (1844), "Illustration" (1846-1848). Created illustrations for literary publications: "Physiology of Petersburg" (St. Petersburg, 1845), "Petersburg collector" (St. PETERSBURG, 1846), the almanac "First of April" (St. Petersburg, 1846), "the First journey through Northern Persia" (Kazan, 1852). Executed the drawings for the stories Е. П. Гребенки — "the Captain Khrushchev", "Weird quail", "the Evil man" (all — 1844); essay И. И. Панаева "St. Petersburg journalist" (1845); the poem И. С. Тургенева "Landowner" (1846), the "Tale of captain Kopeikin" Н. В. Гоголя. The first Illustrator of the poem Н. В. Гоголя "Dead souls (created 104 рисунка; seventy-two were engraved in the technique of woodcuts Е. Е. Бернадским and published four separate books in 1846-1848).

Worked as a make-up artist and prop maker in theatre at the city Opera impresario Ф. Бергера (1863-1868).

he Taught drawing in the Vladimir cadet corps in Kiev (1853-1864). In her last years gave private lessons, was an art teacher in a family of Ukrainian landowners Tarnovsky in the estate of Kachanivka near Chernigov.

Work is represented in major Museum collections in Russia — and the State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov gallery, the Pushkin Museum im. А. С. Пушкина, the State Historical Museum and others.
