Artist of the week: Mark Grotyan

In the first half of 2012 mark Grotjan entered top-10 personal records by contemporary artists. We didn't manage to acquaint readers with the new name in the ranking of the most expensive, like less than a week (!) at Christie's the maximum price for his work three times blocked the record six months ago.

I always thought that art can be anything, and when I went to sell it, it has become more than just an intellectual process. It has become more than what it means in itself. It was the entrance to another space — it's like to go through the back entrance to the store, talk to owner about sales and watch as they happen.

mark Grotjahn Mark (Mark Grotjahn) was Born in Pasadena in 1968. When he was 9 months old, the family moved to the Bay area, near San-Франциско, where he grew up, the future artist.

Grotian graduated from the University of California Berkeley (mA) and the University of Colorado-boulder (BA). In 1995 the artist has worked in the school of painting and sculpture Skowhegan, Maine. After graduating, he moved to Los-Анджелес, where together with his friend Brent Peterson opened the art gallery "Room 702". Currently Grotjahn lives and works in Los Angeles.

In the works grotyana professionals perceive the influence of modernism, abstract minimalism, pop@ -.-арта. The artist himself says that "In a twenty-то important for me was the McLaughlin (John McLaughlin, 1898-1976, American artist-абстракционист, a pioneer of abstract minimalism and "painting the hard corners." — AI.), because he did rigorous abstractions and was the first California artist to breakthrough and have made an international career. But I read "concerning the spiritual in art" Kandinsky, when I was fifteen; I liked Paul Klee, and I studied grandfather's books on Picasso."

a Great influence on him had his grandfather (by profession he was a psychoanalyst). My first series of works "Flowers" Grotian created on the basis of his drawings.

In the mid-1990-х years Gratian worked with colored pencils, experimenting with linear perspective, vanishing point and color, used the convergence of the lines at one point and the horizon line as a decorative element and the basis of composition, creating the same sheet multiple space.

"When I moved to Los-Анджелес, I opened a gallery with my friend Brent Peterson and started to work and exhibit with other artists. This requires new ideas. And I started thinking about what art, for me, in the first place. I always been interested in line and color. I wanted to find a motive with which I could experiment. Six months orthe year I worked on different options. And the picture that I chose was similar to the "three-level perspective", I stopped."

By the end of 1990-х — early 2000-х the artist came to perspective drawing and painting using the techniques of minimalism and abstract motifs lucismo. The horizon line and vanishing point transformed it into a triangular or trapezoidal abstract form, which became the basis of his compositions. It is from these triangular forms are its "Butterfly" (2001-2007) — series of abstract works in which the General vanishing point triangle shapes creates a single polyline term, and multiple @multiple mdas space. The name of the series is conditional, it is not "real" butterflies Hirst, and simply triangular in shape — the main structural elements of the compositions of Grotiana — resemble the wings of these insects. "Butterfly" brought its author the first world success.

Today, the movement of the vanishing point or the use of several vanishing points, separated in space (this was first embodied in the "Butterfly") is one of the most powerful techniques of the artist: he creates a palpable tension between the flat polychrome triangular shapes that touch at the vanishing point (or aspiring to this). Abstraction of Grotiana — is geometrically precise composition, decomposed into fractals, and Renaissance perspective is calculated at the same time. The artist destroys the future and builds a new space.

However, the artist did not invest in this technique so many meanings but now they are seen by the researchers: "Initially I was not interested in the term and had no idea that the papers contain such a powerful idea. I changed the vanishing point, because the changed composition of the work, and considered this method appropriate for this visually interesting".

In 2007, Grotjahn develops a composite idea of the "Butterfly" works from the series "untitled" — geometric abstract paintings from a wide monochrome stripes with a single vanishing point, which is the center of the composition.

In his next big series — "Person" —, the artist turned to simple geometric structure of eyes, nose, and mouth to create abstract forms, simplifying them to the status of masks in the style of Matisse, Jawlensky or Brancusi. Speaking of extreme simplification and stylization of forms of compositional decision paintings, when the disparate contours of the eyes, mouths, as if watching us from the forest, the researchers noted the relationship of "Persons" Grotiana with the art of the primitive tribes of Africa and Oceania, while the artist himself is simply "like the image of eyes looking out of the jungle. I sometimes imaginedimagine the faces of the baboons or monkeys. Can't say that consciously or subconsciously I was influenced by primitive African art, I was influenced by artists who were influenced by it. Picasso is the most obvious example."

the Work of series "the Face" called brutal and elegant, pleasing to the eye and pleasant to the mind. Changes over time and texture of these works: to create the effect of the internal space, the artist uses broad brushstrokes of thick paint, even splashing in the style of Pollock, but the painting surface is aligned so that on close examination, it seems absolutely flat.

In 2012, Gratian returned to the subject of masks — but has passed from plane to volume. Now, the artist casts bronze head with cardboard models, which he did within the framework of performances in the gallery "Room 702". In these models we used the assemblage of scrap materials — boxes, cans, paper rollers from the towels. Many of his masks are on pedestals, some are mounted directly on the wall. These masks are somewhat are three-dimensional projection of the composite quest from the series "Faces".

the work of Grotiana arouse interest among the public and collectors, his exhibitions were held with great success, his works are today in many museums, sold in galleries and is known to go under the hammer at major auction houses.
