From the family of a tailor. In 1912 together with his family emigrated to the United States. Studied at Art students League and the National Academy of design in new-Йорке (late 1920-х). 1920-х we perform a large number of sketches and sketches in the street, in the subway.

Lived in new-Йорке. One of the leaders of American expressionism. He painted portraits, street scenes, landscapes, still lifes, interiors; engaged in monotype. The author of a series of gouaches made in the metro. Went through the passion for creativity Ж. Руо, cubism, surrealism. Together with М. Ротко founder and participant of the new-йоркской of the expressionist group "the Ten" (The Ten, 1935-1939). In 1936-1941 he worked in the Federal art project of the Department of public works (Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration). The editor of the magazine Art Front (the second half of 1930-х). The founder of the art magazine Reality.

In 1934 he held his first solo exhibition in new-йоркской Contemporary Arts gallery. Solo and retrospective exhibitions were held in Philips Memorial gallery (1949), Robert Brown gallery (1985, 1993) in Washington DC, Art Museum, Wichita (Kansas, 1984), Eleonore Austurer gallery in San-Франциско (1995, 1997).

For his contribution in painting awarded National Institute of arts and letters (1961).

Work is represented in several Museum collections, among them — Jewish Museum in new-Йорке, the Art Museum, Wichita (Kansas), the Phillips Collection in Washington, and others.
