WEISBERG Leon (Leon Weissberg)

Painter, graphic artist, sculptor

From a wealthy family, the son of a notary. He studied at the Vienna gymnasium (1900-е — start 1910-х). About 1911, against the will of his father, dropped out and enrolled in the School of graphic arts to О. Кокошке. He studied in Vienna and Munich Academies of fine arts (1914-1915). Participant of the First world war (1916).

In 1923 he settled in Paris, where he became acquainted with many artists, including З. Менкесом, Д. Сейфертом, Й. Вейнгартом, Х. Сутиным and others. After check-out З. Менкеса in the USA he worked in his workshop. Wrote figure, female Nude, portraits, landscapes, still lifes, circus scenes in expressionistic manner. Traveled to Italy, Holland, Germany, Austria.

Exhibited in the salons: Autumn, Tuileries, Independent (1924-1946, with breaks). Participated in exhibitions: "group of four" (А. Абердам, З. Менкес, Л. Вайсберг, Й. Вейнгарт) in the gallery "Sliwinski" (1925), "Artists of Montparnasse" in the gallery "Zak" (1928), "Polish painters of Paris" in the gallery "Bonaparte" (1929), "Paris school" in the gallery "M. Bernheim" (1934) in Paris; the world exhibition in Paris (1937). His personal exhibitions were held in Paris galleries: "Bonaparte" (1930), "Zak" (1937).

In early 1943 the artist's Studio in Paris was destroyed, he himself was arrested 18 февраля 1943. Was first in the Gurs concentration camp, then — Drancy and the camp.

Posthumous exhibitions were held in Paris (1963, 1991, 1993, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005).
