AXENTOWICZ Theodore (Teodor Axentowicz)

Painter, graphic artist

From a family of ethnic Armenians. He graduated from high school in Lviv. He studied at the Munich Academy of fine arts (1878-1882) Г. Хакеля and А. Вагнера; in the Studio Э. Каролюс-Дюрана in Paris (1882-1895). In Paris he studied magazine and book illustration, and collaborated in the edition of "Le Monde Illustre". Repeatedly left in London (1880, 1893), and Rome. Engaged in copying the works of old masters and painters of the XVIII century.

Lived in Krakow. Worked in oil, pastel, watercolor; was engaged in lithography. Performed historical and genre compositions, portraits, landscapes. Was influenced by the pre-Raphaelites. Author paintings: "Wuerzburg, Germany in 1811", the "Polish Embassy from Henry III Valois", "Hutsul funeral" (1882), "the feast of the Epiphany" (1893), "Kolomiyka" (1895), "Baptism of Armenia" (1900). Special popularity was gained thanks to the women's portraits (С. Бернар, Г. Фукье) and "women's heads". The author of the drawings of the stained glass Windows of the Armenian Cathedral in Lviv.

Participant of exhibitions since 1880. A member and Exhibitor of the National society for encouragement of fine arts in Warsaw (since 1890; "Zacheta"), honorary member (from 1928). A member and Exhibitor of the National society of fine arts in Paris (1891, "the Salon of the Champs de Mars"). Member of-учредитель of the Association of Polish artists "Thing" (1897, "Sztuka"/"Art"), by posters of exhibitions in Warsaw, Krakow. A member of the Vienna "secession" and the employee of its printed organ "Ver Sacrum".

Participated in international exhibitions in Berlin (1896), Munich (1905, 1935), London (1906), Vienna (1908), Venice (1914 — Director of the Polish Department, 1926), Paris (1921), Chicago (1927), Prague (1927); at the World exhibitions in Saint-Луисе (1904; participated in the preparation of the Polish exposition) and Rome (1911). His personal exhibitions were held in Cracow (1923, 1927), Lodz (1930), Warsaw (1938).

he Taught at the School of fine arts in Krakow (1895-1934, 1910 — rector); in he founded the art school for women (1897).

he was Buried at the Rakowiecki cemetery in Krakow. Posthumous solo exhibitions have been held in Krakow (1938), Lviv (1939).

Work is represented in many Museum collections, among them — national Museum in kraków, national Museum in Warsaw, national Museum in Poznan, the Pushkin Museum im. А. С. Пушкина.
