From the family doctor. Initial art education has received at School Н. В. Склифосовского in Tiflis. He studied at the Academy of arts in Tiflis (1922) Г. И. Габашвили. At the end of the first year as a fellow of the Academy sent to continue his education in Italy and France; in 1922-1923 traveled to Italy; in 1924-1927 worked in academia Ф. Коларосси in Paris.

Lived in Tiflis (Tbilisi); traveled to Ukraine, the Baltic States, Czechoslovakia. Worked primarily as a landscape painter. The author works: "Old Tbilisi, Kakheti. Winter" (both — 1924), "working-class district in Paris" (1926), "Carousing", "Old bell tower" (mid 1920-х), "Agares" (1927), "the Batumi refineries" (1927), "neighborhoods of Tbilisi" (1931), "Telavi" (1934), "farmers Holiday" (1937), "In the mountains of Samegrelo" (1940), "А. С. Пушкин on the grave А. С. Грибоедова" (1949), "The poet Н. М. Бараташвили in the cabin М. Орбелиани", "Imereti" (1956), "Tbilisi" (1959), "vintage" (1961). Created graphic cycles (watercolor, pencil, ink): "during the war" (the late 1940-х), the Baltic States and Czechoslovakia (both — 1950-е), "Old and new Tbilisi" (1961-1967).

In 1928 was invited to design productions Director К. Марджанишвили. He has designed more than 60 спектаклей, among them: "How" К. Каладзе (1928), "Othello" (1932), "Much ADO about nothing" У. Шекспира (1963), "Madame San-Жен" В. Сарду (1939), "Comedy one night" К. Каладзе (1944-1945), "Russian question" К. М. Симонова (1947), "Pygmalion" Б. Шоу (1955) 2-м State drama theatre (Georgian theatre. К. Марджанишвили); "Abesalom and Eteri" З. П. Палиашвили (1942) at the Tbilisi Opera and ballet theatre. Also collaborated in the theaters (Opera and ballet. Т. Г. Шевченко), Moscow (Theatre of operetta), Leningrad (the State academic theatre of Opera and ballet. С. М. Кирова), Kharkov.

Performed sketches of costumes at the Studio "Georgia-фильм" (1950-е): "Dragonfly" С. В. Долидзе and Л. И. Хотивари (1954), "the Song of Eteri" С. В. Долидзе (1956).

was Engaged in book graphics; in 1934-1937 — main artist sector of children's books in publishing house "Shellgame". He drew illustrations to the books: "don Quixote" М. Сервантеса (1932), "the collected works" И. Г. Чавчавадзе (1934-1935), "Poems" Vazha Pshavela (1951).

From 1919 — participant of exhibitions (exhibition of Georgian artistic society in Tiflis). A member of the Association of revolutionary artists of Georgia (SARMA, 1929-1932), the Union of artists of the USSR. Exhibited: "the Jubilee exhibition of art of the peoples of the USSR" (1927), "the Construction and art of the national republics" (1932), the exhibition art of the Georgian SSR (1937), all-Union art exhibition devoted to 40-летию the great October socialist revolution (1957) in Moscow; the Jubilee exhibition of fine arts of Georgia, dedicated to the 10-летию October (1927), exhibition of works by theatre-декорационного art of Georgia (1933), "20 лет Soviet Georgia" (1941) in Tiflis (Tbilisi) and others. Participant of several exhibitions of Soviet art abroad: in Vienna, Berlin (1930), Paris (1931). His personal exhibitions were held in Paris (1926), Ostend (1927), Tiflis (Tbilisi) (1927, 1928, 1960, 1962, 1965, 1971), Telavi (1927, 1928), Kutaisi (1927, 1928), Moscow and Kharkov (1930), Baku (1961), Carl-Маркс-Штадте (1969).

Honored art worker of the Georgian SSR (1946), people's artist of the Georgian SSR (1960), laureate of the State prize of the Georgian SSR. Ш. Руставели (1971).

Buried in the Pantheon of writers and public figures of Georgia-Mtatsminda. A memorial exhibition was held in Moscow (2001).

Work is represented in many Museum collections, among them — of the State Tretyakov gallery, the Georgian national Museum in Tbilisi. In Tbilisi was opened the memorial House-музей artist.
