from a peasant family, the original artistic skills acquired under the guidance of his father and grandfather - icon painters. He studied at the village school, Simbirsk religious school, Simbirsk Theological Seminary. In 1912, in order to get arts education left for Moscow. Attended school-studio II Mashkova (1912). In the same year he entered the central Stroganov Artistic and Industrial School (1912-1914), worked under the direction of FF Fedorovsky. He continued his education in MUZHVZ (1914-1917) at the sculpture department at the SM Volnukhin; also attended classes at workshops AM Korin, A. Vasnetsov, A. Arkhipov, A. Stepanova, L. Pasternak.

lived mostly in the countryside Prisloniha. He worked as a landscape painter, portraitist, from mid-1930's he wrote genre paintings on themes of village life, work. In the 1940's created a series of works on military theme ( "Fascist flying", 1942).

for the paintings "The Reaping" and "haymaking" (both - 1945) was awarded the State (Stalin) Prize (1946), a picturesque cycle "People in the collective farms" - the Lenin Prize (1966) , State Prize Laureate of the RSFSR. Ilya Repin (1972). In 1947 elected a member of the USSR Academy of Arts, was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR People's Artist of the USSR (1962).

Since 1929 - participant of the exhibition ( "exhibition of new acquisitions of artistic department of the Central Museum TSSR" in Kazan). Exhibitor many-Union, republican and provincial exhibitions. Member of the World Exhibition in Brussels (1958). Held a solo exhibition in Sofia (1964).

Plast - was a Soviet painter.
