Biographical details are scarce. In 1785 arrived in St. Petersburg on call of the Academy of Sciences, where from 1778 worked as a drawing master of the affairs of his elder brother, Johann Georg. Master Engraving House, from 1790 - its head. Served as frontispiece to the edition of "The spectacle of Nature and Art" (St. Petersburg, 1784) and other academic publications. In 1796, sacked in connection with the fact that, nagravirovav for the Academy of Sciences for six days a portrait of Count Gaga "(Swedish King Gustav IV Adolf), printed for a part of the circulation. In 1801-1804 he worked at the Academy of Sciences on piecework basis, by private orders.

Engaged engraving of reproduction; worked in the techniques of the tool, etching, mezzotint, aquatint, dashing, lavisa. During the period of stay in St. Petersburg performed more than 40 works. The most highly regarded women's portraits - E. Ya Derzhavina and NI Lvova.
