From the family of Yalutorovsk of the priest, close friend of the Decembrists, who were in exile in Tobolsk and Yalutorovsk. I was in school, created И. Д. Якушиным then — in Ialutorovsk district school, Tobolsk theological Seminary and in the icon-painting Studio Kozlov in Tobolsk. In the early 1850-х came to St. Petersburg, where he enrolled in the Seminary Model (1851-1853); studied drawing under the guidance of Ф. Г. Солнцева. In 1853 за the portrait was received from the Imperial Academy of arts title of art teacher.

Played watercolor and pencil portraits of the Decembrists and their families: Н. А. Бестужева, muravyovs, П. П. Ершова; song: "Pushchin in Yalutorovsk. Room in the house И. И. Пущина", "father's Death", "grave friends"; series based on the poem "voynarovsky" К. Ф. Рылеева (1860-70-е), "Sushi" П. П. Ершова.

Performed domestic and social cartoons on topics of the life of the Russian province: the series "From a provincial life" (1859), "Provinciana. Excerpts from a fantastic poem in many drawings" (1868). Has created a series of satirical drawings and caricatures in the novels "War and peace" Л. Н. Толстого (1869), "Break" И. А. Гончарова (1875), the series "Excerpts from grammar" (1873), "Seven deadly sins" (1874), "Ride Mare" (1875), "Figures of the Tobolsk province" (1880).

Made a number of ethnographic sketches of the contents, some of which was exhibited at the Polytechnic exhibition in Moscow (1872); for the work of "the Northerners with a musical instrument, Group antiskid and Mansi princes", "the interior of the Kyrgyz Yurt", "From Tashkent sketches" (landscapes) and the other was awarded the silver medal of Moscow University.
