From a Jewish family. In 1889 (some sources — 1894) together with a family moved to the United States. Studied at Art students League and the National Academy of design in new-Йорке (1904-1908).

Lived in new-Йорке, from the mid 1930-х summer months spent in Woodstock (upstate new-Йорк). Apartment and artist's workshop in Manhattan was the meeting place of artists and writers: j. Stella, М. Хартли, Э. Надельмана, Ю. О`Neil and others.

he Painted landscapes, portraits, still lifes; style was formed under the influence of post-impressionism, Fauvism, expressionism. One of the pioneers of American modernism. Became famous after participating in the famous exhibition-форуме modern American painters (The Forum Exhibition of Modern American Painters, 1916). In 1940-е executed abstract compositions; in 1950-е was fascinated by the realism. Member of the American society of painters and sculptors, American artists Congress, Association of artists of Woodstock.

the Participant of group exhibitions at Columbia University (1927), the Museum of American art Whitney (1927-1950), the gallery of art "the Corcoran" (1932, 1957), Academy of fine arts of Pennsylvania (1942, 1952), the Metropolitan Museum of art (1950) and others. Laureate of the prize of the Academy of fine arts Pennsylvania (1952, 1966). His personal exhibitions were held in J.B. Neumann gallery (1925), Babcock gallery (1963-1970, with breaks). A retrospective exhibition was held at the Jewish Museum in new-Йорке (1965), the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. (1974).

Work is represented in major collections of American art of the twentieth century, among them the Metropolitan Museum of art, the Museum of modern art, Museum of American art the Whitney, the Jewish Museum in new-Йорке and others.
