WYCZOLKOWSKI Jan Leon (Leon Wyczółkowski Jan)

Born in the family clerk. He studied at the Warsaw drawing classes (1869-1873) А. Каминского, Р. Хадзевича, В. Герсона; in the Munich Academy of fine arts (1875-1877) in the Studio А. Вагнера; the Academy of fine arts in Krakow (1877-1879) Я. Матейко.

In 1873 he visited the world exhibition in Vienna. In 1878 visited the world exhibition in Paris, where he became acquainted with the works of masters of the Barbizon school and the Impressionists. In 1880-1883 he lived in Lviv, Krakow, Warsaw. In 1883-1893 and worked in the Ukraine, came to Warsaw. Many traveled to Europe, visited Italy, Spain, France, England, Ireland. He lived in Krakow (1895), Poznan (1929). Since 1922 summer months spent at his estate in Poszerza near Bydgoszcz.

Performed historical and genre compositions, portraits, landscapes, still lifes in a realistic manner, from the mid 1880-х actively used painting techniques of impressionism in the mid 1890 — 1900-х was influenced by symbolism. Author of painting works: "Prince Casimir and długosz described" (1873), Alina (1880), "Fishermen" (1891), "Plowing" (1892), "Digging beets" (1893), "Game of croquet" (1895), "Sarcophagi" (1895), "Portrait of Professor Л. Ридигера with assistants" (1897), "self-Portrait" (1900). Tried to work in different techniques of copper engraving (etching, aquatint, soft varnish). He worked in watercolour, pastels, coloured lithography. Performed albums of lithographs "Tatra" (1906), "Lithuanian album" (1907), "Gdansk" (1909), "Eastern-карпатский (Hutsul) album" (1910), "Wawel" (1911-1912), "Ukraine" (1912), "Old Warsaw" (1916), "the Krakow 1915", "Lublin" (1918-1919), "Belovezhskaya experience" (1922), "Gasterij" (1923-1924); the series of pastels "Treasury of Wawel" (1907). during the First world war, visited the Volyn front; on the basis of his front-line sketches created a series of drawings and lithographs "memories of Legionowo" (1920).

Exhibited at exhibitions of the National society for encouragement of fine arts in Warsaw (from 1873; "Zacheta"), a member of the society (1891-1893). Member of-учредитель of the Association of Polish artists "Thing" (1897, "Sztuka"/"Art"). Participated in the world exhibition in Saint-Луисе (1904, bronze medal), International exhibition art-декоративных arts in Paris (1925, gold medal).
