MARGO (Margolis) Boris

Painter, graphic artist, sculptor

From a large family; the elder brother of artist David Margolis. Studied at the Odessa art College — the Polytechnic Institute of fine arts (1919-1928, with a break), the Moscow VKhUTEMAS (1924-1925, in the direction of the school). In 1927 занимался in the Studio П. Н. Филонова in Leningrad.

In 1929 she emigrated to Montreal (Canada), where they lived, mother, sister and brother. In 1930 he moved to new-Йорк. He continued his education at the art school of the Museum Н. К. Рериха with 1932 — taught at the school. In 1941 he married the painter Я. Гелб; in 1943 he became an American citizen.

Created a surreal composition. In 1932 he developed a technique of printmaking with plate, covered with liquid celluloid, — relocat. Created spatial form, decorated with calligraphy reliefs.

In 1939 he held his first solo exhibition in the gallery "Artist" in new-Йорке. In 1940-70-е almost every year he held his solo exhibitions in new-йоркских galleries: "Artist" (1942), "Norlist" (1943), "M. Brandt" (1946-1947), "J. Seligman" (1947, 1949), "B. Parsons" (1947-1962), "World House" (1964), "A. C. A." (1967/1968), as well as at the Brooklyn Museum (1947), the Smithsonian institution in Washington, D.C. (1948), Syracuse University (1966) and others. In recent years cooperated with galleries "M. Rosenfeld" in new-Йорке (1993, 1995, 1998).

prizes were Awarded at the National exhibition of printmaking at the Brooklyn Museum (1947, 1953, 1955, 1960, 1964, 1968), received a scholarship of the National endowment for the arts.

as a visiting Professor lectured at the School of the art Institute of Chicago and art School in Minneapolis (1956), the Art Institute of Chicago (1957-1959), University of Illinois (1960), Minnesota (1962), North Carolina (1963), Syracuse (1966-1967), Ohio (1968).

Work is represented in many Museum collections: the Metropolitan museums of modern art in new-Йорке, National art gallery and the Smithsonian Museum of American art in Washington, the Art Institute of Chicago and others.
