the Initial art education has received in Kamenets secondary school (1880-1888) under the leadership Г. А. Васько. Studied at the Kiev school of drawing (late 1890s-х) Н. К. Пимоненко, Т. П. Платонова in Krakow Academy of arts (1905-1910) Я. Станиславского, Ф. Э. Рушица in Paris in the studios М. Дени and А. Матисса (1910-1911).

he Lived in Kiev (1912-1925) and Kharkiv (1925). Worked as a landscape painter. During the revolution of 1905 года collaborated in the newspaper "Kyiv idea", "Echo". Author of painting works: "mountains In winter" (1908), "First snow" (1909), "On the Seine in Paris" (1911), "Evening", "Noon" (both — 1913), "Golden autumn" (1916), "March" (1917), "Morning on the Dnieper" (1934), "the Road to the farm" (1937), the series "Kamenetz-Подольский state reserve" (1929-1930). He supervised the painting of a peasant House in Kiev (1920). Studied theatre-декорационным art; designed performances on the club scene in Kiev province (1921). He created sketches of costumes and scenery for productions of plays: "Give your heart will — lead in captivity" М. Л. Кропивницкого for the Kharkov drama theatre (1936), "Naymychka" И. Карпенко-Карого for Ukrainian Donetsk theatre (1938) and others.

From 1913 — participant of exhibitions (exhibition of paintings in Kiev). Member of the Association of Kiev artists, the society of Ukrainian artists (1910-е), member-учредитель of the Association of revolutionary artists of Ukraine (ARMU, 1925-1932). He showed his works at exhibitions: Art salon (1914), 1-я all-Ukrainian exhibition of artists of red Ukraine (1927) in Kiev, "the Art of Soviet Ukraine" (1930), the jubilee exhibition of works of artists of the USSR (1938) in Kharkov, and others. His personal exhibitions were held in Kharkov (1934, 1941) and Kiev (1936).

One of the founders and first professors of the National Academy of fine arts and architecture in Kyiv (1917). Taught at Art College (1925-1927) and the Art Institute (1925-1931) in Kharkov.

the Author of a monograph on Т. Г. Шевченко "the Great folk artist" (Kharkov, 1939), numerous articles on art. For his activity was awarded the title of honored artist of the USSR (1936), honored art worker of the Ukrainian SSR (1941).

a Memorial exhibition of the artist were held in Kharkov (1951).

Work is represented in many Museum collections, among them the national art Museum of Ukraine, Kharkov art Museum and others.
