From a peasant family. Studied at icon-painting school of the Kiev-Печерской Lavra (1876-1882), the Kyiv school of drawing Н. И. Мурашко (1882-1884) Х. П. Платонова and then in the Imperial Academy of arts (1884-1888) as a volunteer at К. Б. Венига, А. И. Куинджи, И. Е. Репина (did not graduate). In 1888 he was awarded a small silver medal. In 1895 he received the certificate for teaching in secondary schools.

Lived in St. Petersburg and Kiev, 1917 — in Kiev. In 1883 he participated in the restoration of frescoes of St. Cyril's Church in Kiev, 1904-1908 работал on the murals of the refectory and the Church of all saints of the Kiev-Печерской laurels, 1911 — on the frescoes of St. George Church in Berestechko of Volyn province.

Since the late 1880-х worked in St. Petersburg's magazines "Pictorial review", "Niva", "North", "world illustration".

he Painted landscapes, portraits, creating paintings from the history and life of the Ukrainian people. Author of painting works: "self-Portrait" (1905), "the Kiev-Печерская Laurel. View of the housing of the architect Stepan Kovnir" (1905-1906), "Kyi, Schek and Khoryv and their sister Lybid", "Mom goes" (both — 1907), "Kateryna" (1912-1913), the cycle "Landscapes of ancient Kiev" (1913).

In the first years of Soviet power was engaged in a political poster that served as the scenery for performances of the club tannery in Kiev.

In the second half of 1920-х on orders reorganized historical and local history museums has complied with thematic paintings: "the Trade in slaves in Turkey, Haggling serfs (serfs Landowner changes to dog)" for the historical Museum in Kharkiv, "the Battle of Cossacks with the gentry" for Chernihiv historical Museum, "the Rebellion of the peasants in the village of happy after the announcement of the Tsar's Manifesto 26 февраля 1861 года", "Looking for freedom", "Uman massacre" for the Dnepropetrovsk historical Museum, "The rebels in Kiev in 1113 году" for the Historical Museum of the Ukrainian SSR in Kiev. For the Geological Museum of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR completed the mural "Forest of the Carboniferous period in the Donets basin" (1930) and thirty panels depicting landscapes of different geological periods (1931-1935).

Since the mid 1920-х the main place in the work took works created on the theme of literary works. Created a series of paintings devoted to Т. Г. Шевченко: "House parents Т. Г. Шевченко in the village Kirillovka" (1921), "Т. Г. Шевченко in the Studio В. Ширяева" (1933-1934), "Perebendya" (1933-1934), "Taras Shevchenko — shepherd (When I was thirteen...)" during the occupation of Kiev by German troops was in the city; after the liberation of Kiev wrote a series of paintings devoted to the Soviet army and partisans "the Partisans in ambush" (1944), "the Soviet military in Kiev in 1943 году" (1945), "the Enemy is surrounded by" (1947).

From 1891 — participant of exhibitions (IAH). Exhibited: 1-ая art exhibition of paintings (1911), Ukrainian art exhibitions (1946, 1948, 1950) in Kiev, all-Ukrainian jubilee exhibition in Kharkov, Kiev, Odessa (1927), "Kobzar Т. Г. Шевченко in the visual arts" in Kharkov (1940), all-Union exhibition (1951), show 1-му all-Union Congress of Soviet artists (1957) in Moscow and others. His personal exhibitions were held in Kiev (1944, 1954).

he Taught at the Kiev icon-painting workshop-Печерской Lavra (1905-1907), secondary schools of Kyiv (1919-1932).

For his activity was awarded the title of honored art worker of the Ukrainian SSR (1940), people's artist of the USSR (1951).

he was Buried at Baikove cemetery in Kiev. A memorial exhibition was held in 1964 в Kiev.

Work is represented in many Museum collections; the most significant collection of his works — at the National Museum of art of Ukraine, Kyiv state Museum Т. Г. Шевченко.
