he Lived in Kharkov (until 1941), Kiev. Mainly engaged in easel and book graphics; worked in various kinds of etching (aquatint, soft varnish, dry needle), monotypes, lithographs, and original techniques (watercolor, gouache, pencil). Created graphic series: "dneprostroy" (1932, gouache), "Roads of Ukraine" (1938-1940, etching, aquatint), "Ukraine in flames" (1941-1942, etching), "Roads of war (On the roads of war)" (1943-1944, etching, aquatint), "Ukrainian folk Duma and historical songs" (1947-1957, etching, soft varnish, aquatint).

Illustrated books for publishers Debilitadas of Ukraine, Derived fiction, Goslitizdat and others. The author of illustrations to the works of И. П. Котляревского, Н. В. Гоголя Lesya Ukrainka Т. Г. Шевченко.

Worked on the poster: "Without the General test in 1905 году the victory of the October revolution would have been impossible!" (1930-1931, together with И. М. Литинским), "every Soviet woman..." (1941), "This business of your hands!" (1942), "Comrade, remember the martyred brothers..." (1942), "come to Life steppes, lakes... Т. Шевченко" (1944).

Performed a number of paintings (landscapes, historical paintings and thematic): "Collective farm holiday" (1935), "Tripoli tragedy" (1935), "Return to order" (1937), "the Drama club" (1939), "Tractor" (1930-е), "We'll be back!" (1942), "hay" (1949); created a series of paintings based on the novel "Taras Bulba" Н. В. Гоголя (1950-е). The sketch for a tapestry ("Apple picking", "the Return from the field", both — 1936; "Pereyaslav Council", 1953); decorative panels for the Dnepropetrovsk Opera and ballet theatre, the mural "Mechanization of agriculture" for the USSR pavilion at VSHV (1939).

From 1932 — participant of exhibitions ("Poster at the service of the five-year plan" in Moscow). He showed his works at exhibitions: 1-й teams of artists (1934) in Kharkiv, "Artists-графики Kharkov" (1938), exhibition of the best works of Soviet artists (1941), "Exhibition of etching. 1934-1944" (1944), all-Union art exhibitions (1946, 1947, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1958, 1961, 1967, 1970), "Ukrainian Soviet graphics" (1954) in Moscow, Republican art exhibitions (1955, 1956, 1958, 1959, 1961, 1970), "the Book, a drawing, a poster of the USSR" (1959), "Soviet Ukraine" (1960) in Kyiv and other. Exhibitor of many exhibitions of Soviet art abroad: in Japan (1932), Denmark, Turkey (1933), Poland (1955), India, Vietnam (1961), Canada (1963), Germany, France, Hungary (1965). His personal exhibitions were held in Kharkov (1932), Moscow (1940), Prague (1959).

he Taught at the Kharkiv art Institute (1932-1941, 1947-1949), 1962 — the head of the graphic workshop of the USSR Academy of arts in Kiev.

After the liberation (1943) Kiev directed the restoration of the Kiev Museum of fine arts, 1943-1946 —, the Director of the Museum.

Author of several articles on art in periodicals (the Art of Soviet Ukraine will live again // Literature and art. 01.05.1944; the Work of Polish friends // Slavs. 1955. No. 4; 40 лет Ukrainian Soviet fine art in Communist Ukraine. 1957. No. 11).

For his activity was awarded the title of honored worker of arts of the USSR (1943), people's artist of the USSR (1957), member-корреспондента Academy of arts of the USSR (1958), people's artist of the USSR (1963). Laureate of the State prize of the USSR them. Т. Г. Шевченко (1969).

Work is represented in many Museum collections; the most representative collection — in the Museum of national art of Ukraine in Kiev.
