From a wealthy Jewish family. Studied at the Kiev art school (1904-1906). In 1906 he emigrated to the USA. He continued his education at the National Academy of arts in new-Йорке (1912-1915) Л. Кролла, Э. Карслена, И. Г. Олинского and the historical-филологическом the faculty of Ohio University (1915-1918). In 1918 he served in the medical corps of the U.S. army, then traveled to the United States.
In 1919 he lived in Paris, attended classes at the Sorbonne. In 1920 he moved to Berlin; attended lectures at the University Friedrich-Вильгельма. Was fascinated by constructivism. In 1924 he returned to the U.S., lived in new-Йорке. Created drawings and lithographs, devoted to American industry: the industrial cities, construction sites, factories, ports ("Tap", "High voltage", "Hudson bridge", "channel Factory", "Inside Manhattan", "the Birth of the skyscraper", "Prosperity of America", "the inhabitants of the barges", "Storm over Manhattan", "Tanks"). In his essay "The Americanization of Art" (1927) urged artists to portray: "the skyscrapers of new-Йорка, the grain elevators of Minneapolis, the steel mills of Pittsburgh, the oil wells of Oklahoma".
Created the sketches of scenery to the play "Gas" Г. Кайзера in Chicago's Goodman Theatre (1926). As an artist and journalist he contributed to magazines "Nation", "Revue", "Arts", "Theatre Arts Monthly". One of the creators (1926), later writing and art editor of the magazine "The New Masses". The author of a monograph on the master of satirical graphics У. Гроппере (published posthumously in 1983).
lectures on Soviet art in the Société Anonyme. He published the book "Contemporary Russian art"; has published articles on Soviet artists in the American press.
