From the family of a military doctor; grandson of Alexander Petrovich Karpinsky — the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He received his General education in the Vyborg Russian real school (1911-1918), art — at the Drawing school in Viborg (1917-1920) Р. Линдквиста; the advice Е. П. Самокиш-Судковской.

he Lived in Vyborg. In 1925 встречался with И. Е. Репиным in his estate Penates in Kuokkala; the artist later recalled: "Repin has taught me the most important, most valuable, without which it is impossible to serve the art and what, unfortunately, many who are committing to the Academy and learn. he Painted portraits, landscapes, still lifes; in his work followed the traditions of Russian realist art, particularly of lyrical landscape. Participated in exhibitions of Vyborg artists society (1932). His personal exhibitions were held in Vyborg (1934, 1936).

he Taught painting and drawing at the Vyborg Russian real school (1926-1939).

In late 1938 he received an invitation to work at the Film Studio Suomi in Helsinki; in February 1939, along with his family went to Finland. Participated in the creation of many feature films. Held several solo exhibitions in the cities of Finland. The Chairman of the Society of Russian artists in Finland, the Finnish society of artists-реалистов (1963). Member of the society "Finland — Soviet Union."

Dealt with the organization of exhibitions of Soviet art in Finland (exhibition of works of artists of Kukryniksy); author of articles about creativity И. К. Айвазовского, И. Е. Репина, И. И. Левитана. Participated in the compilation "New of Repin" (Leningrad, 1969). On the initiative of the artist to the Museum-усадьбу "Penates" Society of Russian artists in Finland over 60 рисунков И. Е. Репина and materials about him.

he was Buried at the Orthodox cemetery of the city of Hamina. Memorial exhibitions were held in Vyborg (2001) and Helsinki (2009).

Work is represented in several Museum collections, including the State Museum "Vyborg castle".
