he Studied at the Drawing school society for the encouragement of arts in St. Petersburg (1911-1916) Н. К. Рериха, А. А. Рылова. In 1916-1917 находился in the military, then served in the red Army. From 1918 — the head of the extra-curricular section in the provincial Department of public education of the city of Nevel; contributed to the emergence and activities of the MSU science Association.

he Lived in Petrograd (Leningrad). One of the leaders of the Union of art workers (Arabica, 1922-1923). Participated in the design of the city to the revolutionary holidays (1918-1928). The author of paintings on historical and-революционные theme: "on the road" (1919), "the Age. Five episodes of the October revolution in Petrograd" (1927), "Chief (October)" (1929, triptych, together with А. А. Андреевым, О. А. Пчельниковым), "In red square" (1932), "Ode to the memory of commander Jan Fabricius" (1932). He drew a series of works (oil, watercolor, gouache, pastel, tempera): "1918 год" (1921-1922), "the history of the ideas of the October revolution" (1950-1969), "War" (1960-е). He painted landscapes, still lifes.

he made several creative trips around the country; has performed cycles of works, grouped under the name of "Country Councils": the "Armenian Suite" (1933-1934), "Caucasians" (1934), "Avar Suite" (1936-1937), "Sami Suite" (1936-1937), "Earth" (1950-60-е).

In 1941-1942 выезжал to the front; performed sketches and studies, which created a series of "1941-1943 годы" (1943-1944).

have Created a series of easel paintings (pencil, coal, gouache, pastel) on the literary theme: "King Lear" У. Шекспира (1951), "Boris Godunov" А. С. Пушкина (1967), "the Word about Igor's regiment" (1968).

From 1912 — participated in exhibitions. A member and Exhibitor: Art-артистической Association (1912), Jewish society for the encouragement of the arts (1916-1918); the Exhibitor of the "World of art" (1918). Participated exhibitions: 1-й state free exhibition of works of art (1919), of paintings by Petrograd artists of all directions (1923), 1-й citywide exhibition of fine arts (1930), "War and art" (1930), "Artists of the RSFSR for XV years" (1932), works by Leningrad artists (1938) in Petrograd (Leningrad); 1-й state exhibition of paintings by local and Moscow artists in Vitebsk (1919); "art of the third, decisive year of the five-year plan" (1931) in Moscow. His personal exhibitions were held in Leningrad (1935, 1962, 1969).

the Director of the Leningrad radio (1925-1930), Director of the State Russian Museum (1932-1934). The author of the essays-воспоминаний.

Work is represented in many Museum collections, among them — of the State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov gallery, national art gallery of Armenia in Yerevan.
