born in the family clerk. Enjoys photography with 10 years. In 1905, after graduating high school, he entered the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow University. At the same time taking classes at the Stroganov School.

In 1907 became a member of the Russian Photographic Society in Moscow (RIF). Participated in the International Exhibition in Dresden (1909), where he received a gold medal. In 1913 he was invited on a competitive basis to work as an instructor in the RFO.

In 1914 he organized a film studio on fotootdel Khanzhonkov. Ibid first started working cinematographer.

Since the beginning of World War I was drafted into the army. In 1915 he was taken prisoner by German and, as a prisoner of war until 1918 was in Germany, where he translated several books on photo-kinohimii.

In 1918 worked as a cameraman on a film studio Kharitonov, Ermoleva, the factory "Biofilm" and in the political department of 41-th division of the Red Army (1919), then was invited to the Odessa Film Studios.

In 1921 he worked in the All-Russia fotokinootdele. From 1923 to 1930 headed the Department of Film Technology and filming in the SCC (State College cinematography). In 1936 he was arrested and sentenced to five years of corrective labor camps on charges of distribution of "pornography". Serving his sentence at BAMlag NKVD (1936-1939), worked as a photographer and photo-chief engineer of the Bureau of the Office BAMlag; led courses photos. In 1939 was released ahead of the shock work on the construction of railways.

In 1939-1940 worked as a photographer-artist museum in the former Trinity Sergeeva Lavra. During the Great Patriotic War remained and worked in Moscow.

In 1945, retired, worked as a portraitist treaty.
