place of the nobility, the son of an official of the Astrakhan Exchequer. His early education was at the Moscow Institute of Nobility. In 1846-1855 was volnoprihodyaschim IAH student in the class of historical painting in Markov. In 1849, interrupted education, to 1851 he lived in the Caucasus in 1854 - in the Ukraine. In 1852, for the painting "The sale of slaves on the eastern shore of the Black Sea" was awarded a small silver medal in 1854 for his film "The mountain on the coast, look on the horizon, the emergence of the first Russian ship" - a large silver medal. In 1855 he graduated from the course with the title of the artist. In 1857, for the painting "The Caucasian Roma (" gypsy camp in the mountains of the Caucasus ") was elected an academician. In 1860, for the painting "View of the East coast of the Black Sea", "Children playing in a cemetery in Constantinople," "Seeing recruits" and "Malorossiyskie girls, Gad wreaths of marriage" was awarded the title of professor.

Prior to 1860 he lived in St. Petersburg, was a frequent visitor to Moscow. He worked as a genre painter, landscape painter, portraitist. Had a reputation for excellence and watercolor painter. In the second half of 1850 was an active participant in the drawing Pyatnitskii evenings "at the Society to promote artists. Illustrated edition of "Our Friday", "Picturesque Ukraine" (both - St. Petersburg, 1861).

Since 1853 had lived and worked in the estate of the parents Ganzhevets Kursk province. Since the beginning of 1860 to 1880 in connection with the disease lived there permanently, creative activity is almost not studied. In mid 1880 he moved to Kharkov, where in 1887 led the studio painting. From 1889 - Vice-President of the Kharkov Art Lovers Association.
