the Son of a major timber merchants С. И. Либермана and Г. М. Паскар, Director of the First state theatre for children in Moscow. He spent his childhood in Petrograd and Moscow. In 1921 he was sent for treatment in London. He studied in England, from 1926 — France, École de Roches. Studied painting and architecture at the Academy А. Лота (1929-1931), architectural Department at the National school of fine arts (1930-1932) А. Перре.

he Lived in Paris. Assistant art editor, then art editor of the weekly magazine Vu (1933-1936). Participated in the creation of one of the first color films on art, — La Femme Française (1936). For magazine graphics was awarded a gold medal at the world exhibition in Paris (1937). Became interested in photography. Worked on the poster.

In 1941, he left occupied Paris via Madrid and Lisbon to new-Йорк. He was married (second marriage, from 1942), on the niece of the artist А. Е. Яковлева. In 1946 he became an American citizen. In 1950-е took up painting. Wrote figurative and geometric abstract compositions. In 1960-е created monumental sculptures-ансамбли of large-sized scrap left over after production machine (steel beams, pipes, drums, tanks used).

In 1960-е published the book "the Artist in his workshop" and conducted the same exhibition at the art Institute of Chicago, is dedicated to the artists of the Paris school; it includes portraits М. Шагала, П. Пикассо, К. Бранкузи, А. Модильяни and other masters. In the late 1980-х worked on the photo project "9 американцев", devoted to outstanding American artists (А. Колдер, Р. Раушенберг, Р. Мазервелл, W. de Kooning, М. Ротко and other; is not published). In 1990-е released several of their essay: Campidoglio (1994, devoted to the architectural ensemble of the Capitol in Rome; Preface И. А. Бродского), Then (1995), Prayers in Stone (1997).

the First personal exhibition was held in new-йоркской the Betty Parsons gallery (1960). A posthumous exhibition of photographs was held in Los-Анджелесе (2003, the Getty Museum).
