born in the family of a soldier of the Life Guards regiment. In 1759-1767 he studied at the IAH, originally engraved in the classroom (from 1761), then in the class of ornamental sculpture (from 1764) in 1765 was transferred to the class on the picturesque "landscape art". Studied with A. Perezinotti. In 1767, for "Type field with a leaking source" was a small gold medal and the right to a pensioner's trip.

In the same year went to Paris, continued his studies at the landscape and battle-FI Casanova. In September 1769 he moved to Rome, worked independently. Term pensionerstva was extended until March 1772, after which Shchedrin stayed in Italy and lived with their funds. In 1776 he returned to Russia. In the same year for the paintings created during the pensionerstva, awarded the title of "appointed" in academics and appointed head of the class of landscape painting. Shchedrin - a prominent Russian landscape last third of the XVIII - early XIX century, the representative of classicism. In contrast, FY Alekseyev, which develops in his work line cityscape-led, Shchedrin opens a new direction in landscape art. His works are filled with emotional content, disclose the relationship of man to nature. In the pictures with views of St. Petersburg and especially the suburbs - Pavlovsk, Peterhof, Gatchina - the reality is combined with a poetic perception of the world. They felt sentimental mood with his characteristic sense of worship and the desire for unity with nature.
