he received his General education in the German school of St. Peter in St. Petersburg. He studied at the Imperial Academy of arts (1850-1854), in the sculpture class П. К. Клодта. In 1853 he was awarded a small silver medal for sculpting from life.

In 1854 with his own funds went to Italy, lived mainly in Rome and Florence. In 1855 (according to some information, in 1857) he received the title neklassnogo (free) artist. In 1872 he returned to St. Petersburg. In 1869 the bas-медальоны portraits П. А., В. А. and Л. П. Кочубеев he was awarded the title of academician.

Worked in the field of decorative, monumental and chamber sculptures. By order of the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna did the statue of the NAIADES fountain. Created the sculptural composition "Italian" (1863), Tatiana (based on the novel "Eugene Onegin" А. С. Пушкина; about 1872), "Christ in Gethsemane" ("the agony in the garden"; 1882), portraits of "g-на Card" (about 1852), А. В. Кочубея (1868), Т. Г. Шевченко (after 1869), Н. Н. Ге (1873), И. С. Тургенева, Н. А. Некрасова (both — 1878), М. Е. Салтыкова-Щедрина, Г. Г. Бове (both — 1879), К. Н. Батюшкова (1887), В. Е. Маковского (1894). The author of the monuments-бюстов Peter the great (1875), Н. В. Гоголю (1881), М. В. Ломоносову (1892), the monument to Alexander II in the Moscow Kremlin (1882, together with М. А. Чижовым), projects monuments А. С. Пушкину ("Pushkin on the seashore", 1872), Н. В. Гоголю (1902, 2-я prize of the contest); tombstones Countess Tyszkiewicz ("Woe"), А. И. Герцена (1872) in nice, А. Н. Серова (together with Л. Н. Бенуа) in St. Petersburg. A number of statuettes Zabello ("Russian knight", 1860-е; "Ermak", about 1877; "Warrior in chain mail") served as reference for products Kasli iron foundry.

1852 — participated in exhibitions. He exhibited his work at academic fairs, exhibitions TPHV, the world exhibition in Philadelphia (1876), national industrial-художественной exhibition in Moscow (1882) and others. In 1869 he held his personal exhibition in St. Petersburg.
