Live in Moscow (1957). Since 1956 working on paintings and graphic works (series "Rus") on the theme of Russian history (the cycles "Andrei Rublev", "the Word about Igor's regiment", "Kulikovo Field"). Author of historical and genre paintings, portrait artist, landscape painter: "1905-й year", "Nina" (both — 1955), "Dostoevsky in St. Petersburg" (1956), "Dostoevsky's Petersburg" (1956), "Julius Fuchik" (1957, Grand-при at the International competition of young artists in Prague), "Roads of war. 1941 год" (1955-1964), "Prince Igor" (1962), "Russian Icarus" (1963), "Lord Novgorod the Great" (1965), "Prince Dimitri" (1967), "the Russian beauty" (1968), "Ivan the terrible" (1974), "Future astronaut" (1984), "Youth of Andrei Rublev" (1985), "Grandsons of gostomysl" (1986, triptych), "the Legend of Kitezh" (1986), "Yaroslavna" (1986), "Eternal Russia" (1988), "the Great experiment" (1990), "Boyan. Made creative trips to ancient cities of Russia (1957; Belozersk, Rostov Great, Suzdal, Vladimir, Novgorod, Pskov, Bitter, Yaroslavl), Denmark (1966), Vietnam (1967, correspondent of the newspaper "Komsomolskaya Pravda"), Laos (1967), in Russian North (1968), Chile (1973), India (1973), the construction of the Baikal-Амурской highway (1977), Nicaragua (1983). The creative mission completed graphic series: "Days and nights of Vietnam" (1967), "Laos" (1967-1968), "Russian North. Homeland", "Cyril-Белозерский monastery" (both — 1968), "Chile" (1973), "BAM" (1977), "Nicaragua diary" (1983) and others.

In 1960-70-е illustrated books for the Moscow publishers; he drew a series of illustrations to the works Ф. М. Достоевского, А. А. Блока, П. И. Мельникова-Печерского, Н. С. Лескова, А. И. Куприна, А. К. Толстого. Has created a series of easel graphic (pastel, charcoal) works on the themes of the novels Ф. М. Достоевского "Idiot" (1956), "Netochka Nezvanova" and "White nights" (1970).

co-authored with his wife Н. А. Виноградовой-Бенуа he designed a number of Opera and ballet productions of "Prince Igor" А. П. Бородина (1980) and "the Queen of spades" П. И. Чайковского (1982, both — State Opera, Berlin), "Masquerade" А. И. Хачатуряна (1981; Theatre of Opera and ballet, Odessa), "the Legend of the invisible city of Kitezh and the maiden Fevronia" Н. А. Римского-Корсакова (1983, Bolshoi).

Performed the large painting "the Contribution of the peoples of the Soviet Union to world culture and civilization" in the building headquarters-квартиры UNESCO in Paris (1980), designed the interiors of the USSR Embassy in Madrid (1989), participated in the restoration and reconstruction of buildings of the Moscow Kremlin (1997-1999), art Director and author of the interiors of the residence of the Russian President in the Kremlin.

Since 1957 — participant of exhibitions (exhibition of works by young artists of the Soviet Union for the VI world festival of youth and students in Moscow). Exhibited: all-Union art exhibition (1958 — "40 лет of the Komsomol"), "Young — young" (1960, exhibition of works by artists of the magazine "Young guard"), Republican art exhibition "Soviet Russia" (1960), monumental art (1962) in Moscow and others. The member of artists Union of USSR (since 1967). His personal exhibitions were held in Moscow (1957, 1964, 1967, 1969, 1973, 1978, 1986, 1994, 1999, 2010), Leningrad — St.-Петербурге (1972, 1979, 1995, 2000, 2011), Warsaw (1960), Rome (1963), Copenhagen (1966), Hanoi, Chatlounge (both — 1967), Paris (1968, 1987), Santiago (1973), Stockholm (1974), Helsinki (1975, 1980), East Berlin (1975), the cities of Germany (travelling exhibition, 1976), Tokyo (1978), Milan (1982), Managua, Havana (both — 1984), Madrid (1985), London (1987) and other cities.

Author of several articles on art: "the BLOB and the image" (Young guard, 1960, No. 1); memories: "the Road to you. From the notes of the artist" (the Young guard, 1965, No. 10–12).

One of the founders of the all-Russia society of protection of monuments of history and culture (1965). The organizer and first Director of the all-Union Museum of decorative-прикладного and folk art of the USSR in Moscow (1981).

the Honored worker of arts of RSFSR (1973), people's artist of the USSR (1980). Member of the Russian Academy of arts (since 2000). Honorary member of the Royal Academy of fine arts of San Fernando in Madrid (1979) and the Royal Academy of fine arts San-Хорхе in Barcelona (1979). Laureate of the State prize of Russia (1997), full cavalier of the order "For merits before Fatherland".

Work is represented in many Museum collections, among them — of the State Tretyakov gallery, the State Central theatre Museum. А. А. Бахрушина State Central Museum of contemporary history of Russia, State literary Museum, the State Russian Museum, State Museum of history St.-Петербурга and others. In Moscow opened the Moscow state art gallery folk artist of the USSR Ilya Glazunov (2004).
