Vyacheslav Kalinin acquired a profession of cabinetmaker in the Abramtsevo Art School and Abramtsevo Art College. In 1963 he graduated from the Abramtsevo College of Industrial Art named after V. M. Vasnetsov in Khotkovo near Moscow.

In 1960s Kalinin joined the group Lianozovo Circle. He met E. L. Kropivnitsky, V. Y. Sitnikov, A. T. Zverev, V. Yakovlev, G. Costakis and others collectors of the Nonconformist Art in the studio of Oscar Rabin.

Since 1962 he worked as an interior designer in different organizations.

The personal exhibitions of Kalinin were held in Moscow State V. I. Lenin Pedagogical Institute (Moscow, 1962), the I. V. Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy (Moscow, 1965), Moscow joint committee of graphic artists (MOKKhG; Moscow, 1979), Eduard Nakhamkin Art Gallery (New York, 1989), Badenschatz Gallery (Basel, Switzerland, 1989), Bea Bern Expo (Bern, Switzerland, 1992).

Since 1967 Kalinin participated in different Russian and foreign exhibitions in Italy, Federal Republic of Germany and Switzerland. In 1974 Kalinin took part in the exhibition ProgressiveStrömungeninMoskau 1957–1970 in the Museum Bochum in Germany. In the same year his works were shown at the second autumn exhibition of paintings in the open airin the Izmaylovo Park, the exhibition was organized two weeks later after the Bulldozer Exhibition. In 1975 he participated in the Exhibition of paintings of Moscow Artists at the pavilion Apiculture (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy (VDNKh), Moscow).
