VIZIN Emmanuil Pavlovich

Graphic artist, painter, ceramist

Emmanuil Vizin studied in the gymnasium in Odessa (1911–1917) and in Ekaterinoslavl (1917–1919). Vizin attended the Polytechnic school of fine arts in Odessa (1923–1926), studied at the faculty of painting, under the guidance of T. B. Fraerman. In 1926–1930 he attended the Higher Art Technical Institute (VKhUTEIN) — Moscow Polygraphic Institute, the faculty of graphic arts, and studied under V. A. Favorsky; he also attended the studios of A. A. Osmerkin, N. N. Kupreyanov, D. P. Shterenberg.

Vizin lived in Moscow. He was married to the sculptor E. M. Gurevich. Vizin painted a lot of portraits, landscapes, genre compositions; he often worked in watercolour, engraving, eau-forte, lithograph, linocut. He executed a series of sketches in watercolour In the Museum of New Western Art (1933); in 1963–1965 he created a cycle of linocuts on Russian folk tales and bylinas (Russian heroic epic).

In 1930s Vizin worked for the publishing house Molodaya Gvardia (“Young Guard”), the State Publishing House of Children’s Literature (Detgiz), the State Publishing House for Literature (Goslitizdat) and others. Vizin drew illustrations for the books: Two Hearts by V. V. Smirnova (1933); The Sweet Servitude by N. N. Lyashko (1934); My Life by V. A. Degtyarev (1951); the collected stories Children of Our Motherland (1953); Poems by T. G. Shevchenko (1955); The Little Sparrow by A. M. Gorky (1957); Ossetian Folk Tales (1959); The Overcoat, Diary of a Madman by N. V. Gogol; Tales of Odessa by I. E. Babel.

Vizin worked also as a ceramist; he created majolica compositions Masha and the Bear (1955), Healthy Fox on Beaten Wolf (1956), The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids. In 1938–1939 the artist worked in the workshop of monumental painting under the USSR Academy of Architecture.

Since 1925 the artist participated in different exhibitions (the exhibition in Odessa Seamen’s Club). Vizin showed his works at the exhibition of young artists (1931), at the festival exhibition of works by young artists (1936), the All-Union exhibition of young artists dedicated to the 20th anniversary of VLKSM (the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League) in 1939, the exhibition of decorative arts (1955), the 5th exhibition of works by book artists (1955), the All-union art exhibitions (1954, 1955), the exhibition of prints by Moscow artists (1957, 1960), the exhibition Socialist Moscow in works of Moscow painters (1957), the exhibition Folk applied and decorative arts of the RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic) in 1956/1957 and in 1958, the exhibition of watercolour and ceramics by Moscow artists (1960), the exhibition of new product samples of industrial art (1961) in Moscow and others. The personal exhibitions of Vizin were held in Moscow (1976, one-day show; 1980).

Vizin was participant of the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945).

Works by Emmanuil Vizin are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts and others.
