BENOIS Albert Alexandrovich

June 11, 1888 (St. Petersburg) — August 13, 1960 (Paris)

Architect, painter, graphic artist

Benois was born to family of artists; he was a son of the watercolor painter A. A. Benois (Konsky), great-nephew of the architect N. L. Benois.

Benois graduated from the Institute of Civil Engineers in St. Petersburg. He received his primary art education under the guidance of his father. He taught at the School of Drawing under the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (OPKh).

In 1910 Benois settled in France. He continued his education at a special school of architecture in Paris, worked at the A. Zoa and P. Vignal studios. Benois created paintings and watercolor landscapes with views of Paris and its environs, Brittany, Austria, Italy and England.

Benois exposed his works at the Autumn Salon and at the Salon of Independents. He performed designs of the Orthodox Church at Saint-Geneviève-des-Bois cemetery and the memorial church at the graves of Russian soldiers at Saint-Hilaire-le-Grand cemetery; he also created designs of crosses and headstones. Albert Benois was a member of the society Ikona (“Icon”).
