HAU Vladimir Ivanovich

1816 (Reval) — 1895 (St. Petersburg)

Painter, miniaturist, graphic artist

Vladimir Hau studied under the guidance of C. F. von Kügelgen in 1827–1832 in Reval. In 1832–1836 he studied as a noncredit student at the Imperial Academy of Arts (IAKh), under the guidance of A. I. Zauerveid. In 1836 Hau was awarded big silver medal and conferred title of free (non-class) artist. In 1838–1840 he studied in Germany and Italy. In 1840 Hau was appointed court portrait painter. In 1849 he was elected academician of portrait painting.

Vladimir Hau was a significant master of watercolor portrait, which became popular in 1830s–1850s. His manner of painting was characterized by naturalness, detailed and realistic images. Hau depicted in chamber gala portraits all beau monde of the middle of the 19th century.

Works of Vladimir Hau are in many museum collections, including the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts and others.
