came from a family of serfs landowner Vladykino. Since 1836 he studied at the Art class in Moscow with AS and V. S. Dobrovolsky, as well as in I. T. Durnova and KI Rabusa. At the end of 1830 met in Moscow with VG Belinsky, who introduced Gorbunova in his literary circle.

In 1840 arrived in St. Petersburg. As a student involved in class volnoprihodyaschego historical painting at the IAH K. Briullov. In 1841 at the request of Briullov, VA Zhukovsky, and MF Orlov received his freedom. In 1843 and 1845 was awarded three small silver medals. In 1846, released from the Academy with the rank neklassnogo (free), painter. In the 1830's - 1840's carried out a series of graphic portraits, including portraits of Belinski, Mikhail Lermontov, Turgenev. In 1845, commissioned by AIHertsen created a series of lithographed portraits of writers - Belinsky, Herzen, Nikolai Gogol, AV Koltsov, PV Annenkov, historian TN Granovsky, journalist EF Korsch and others. In 1851 a portrait painter Markov awarded the title of academician. In 1851-1888 he taught drawing at the Smolny Institute in St. Petersburg.

He turned to the monumental painting, in early 1860 to comply with the image of Alexander's Cathedral in Vyatka, in mid-1870 took part in the painting of Christ the Savior in Moscow. Among the works known Gorbunov: "Gypsy," "Returning from the fields", "Meeting with the children of the Emperor Alexander II, during a walk in the park of Pavlovsk, the portraits of Peter I, Alexander II and Alexander III for the Commercial School in St. Petersburg.
