was born in the family of the writer and theater activist, director of the Imperial Theaters AA Maikov. The father of the poet AN Maikova, journalist and critic VN Maikova, literary historian LN Maikova.

from 1801 studied at the Second Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg. Released early in 1811 with the rank of second lieutenant. Served Tarnopolsky Infantry Regiment 27 th Infantry Division. Took part in the Patriotic War of 1812. During the battle of Borodino was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir the 3rd degree with a bow.

Systematic arts education is not received. According to family legend, during a stay of the regiment in Paris first developed oil paints, spent much time in the Louvre. Subsequently, the copying of prints and originals. In 1821 he retired with the rank of major, settled in the suburban estate Nikolskoe, where he began to paint yourself.

In 1834 he moved to St. Petersburg. In 1835 created the altarpiece "The Ascension of the Virgin" for the Holy Trinity Church of the Life Guards regiment Izmailovskogo, for which the personal command of Emperor Nicholas I was awarded the title of academician.

In 1842, together with the son of Apollo, made a trip to Italy and France. During his stay in Rome, organized the evening, which were attended by all representatives of the Russian artistic colony. In 1843 once again made a trip abroad and visited Germany, Italy and France. In the same year was commissioned to fulfill the eighteen images for the iconostasis Chapel of St. Alexander Nevsky in St. Isaac's Cathedral (finished in 1855). At the consecration of the cathedral was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus 2 nd degree.

In the early 1850's created an image for the iconostasis of churches of St. Nicholas and St. Vladimir in Sebastopol, ceiling lamps, door medallions and desyudeporty in the mansion of Princess ZI Yusupova in Liteyny Avenue in St. Petersburg .

In Maikov Petersburg house on Sadovaya Street has one of the most famous literary salons of 1840 - 1850.

Maikova works are in several museum collections, including the State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery and others.
