Biographical details are scarce. Born in a large Jewish family. He studied art in Odessa. With 14 years working in the icon-painting studio. In 1918 entered the second state free art workshops, where he studied with VE Tatlin. In those same years, made friends with DP Schr.

In 1921-1922 he lived in Berlin, in 1923 settled in Paris. Since 1924 has exhibited his works in the Salon d'Automne and the Tuileries. He was familiar with many of the artistic life of Paris at the time - Pablo Picasso, H. Gries, J. Brack, J. Shapiro, O. Ljubic, M. Kikoin and others. In the 1920 - 1930 held a number of solo exhibitions in galleries "Bernheim", "Zach", "Bié-Worms and others.

During the Second World War to escape persecution by the support of friends. In 1947 participated in the exhibition of "New Image" Gallery "Artists" in New York.

Creativity Stirling of diversity. In the early years (early 1920) was close to constructivism. In the 1920's under the influence of Picasso, Gris, Braque turned to cubism. Later came a more decorative and flat style. In the works 1930 - Still life with bouquets of flowers and cells, portraits - pronounced lyrical element. The postwar works bear the imprint of a tragedy - a "dark nightmarish visions." In the early 1950's painting style has changed Stirling again. Later works (1950 - 1970-e) indicates the freedom of the color palette and special poetry, the artist depicted on canvas imaginary landscapes, fantastic creatures and fabulous animals.

Sterling Works are in many museum and private collections, including the National Library of France, the Pompidou Center in Paris and others.
