In September 1909 joined the Higher Art School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture at IAH, but was expelled after a three-month probationary period established for the Jews, taken in excess of three percent rule. In 1909-1911 he lived with her parents in Bryansk. In 1911 and 1913 went to Paris, where he met with AP Archipenko and A. Modigliani. In 1914 he lived in Moscow. In 1923 he emigrated, lived first in Berlin, with the end of 1923 - in Paris. In 1930, took French citizenship. Since 1923 he worked primarily as a sculptor, in the field of easel and monumental sculpture. In 1926-1927 together with his brother created the scenery for the play non-repertory Diaghilev's "Cat».

In the postwar years was recognized as the head of constructivist direction in sculpture. In 1946 he entered the committee interior of the new realities, since 1953 - Vice-President of the passenger compartment, since 1956 - Honorary President. In 1961 awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor.
