Biographical information about the artist scarce.

A native of Livonia. General education in the School of the Lutheran Church of St. Peter and Paul in St. Petersburg, then - in Tartu University. In 1911 he entered the military service, participated in the Patriotic War of 1812. In 1813-1815 he served in the cavalry with the rank of lieutenant in 1813 in the Battle of Leipzig as a result of injuries lost his right hand. He retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

From 1814 began to paint independently, worked with his left hand. In mid 1810-s studied in Bern and G. Laurie in Dusseldorf in T. Hildebrand.

Many travel throughout Europe, painted landscapes of Switzerland and Italy. Weimar met in JW Goethe, was a friend in VA Zhukovsky, whose daughter was married. In 1835 he lived permanently in Germany.

In 1835, over represented in the Council of the IAH has been awarded the title of academician. In 1837 was appointed court painter, he worked under orders of Nicholas I. He was engaged in engraving.
