KOROVIN Alexey Konstantinovich

Alexey Korovin was a son of the famous painter Konstantin Korovin and Anna Fidler, chorister in S. I. Mamontov's private opera. At an early age he lost both legs in an accident. His mental state was deeply affected by this trauma, he attempted suicide several times.

Korovin studied painting under the guidance of his father. He attended gymnasium in Moscow. From his earliest years Korovin became acquainted with theatre and decorative art. In 1918 he joined the society Mir Iskusstva ("World of Art"), took part in the exhibitions of the society in 1918 and in 1921. In 1920s Korovin showed his works at the 19th exhibition of the All-Russian Central Exhibition Bureau under the Department of Fine Arts of Narkompros (National commissariat of education) in Moscow.

In 1923 Korovin together with his parents immigrated to France, lived in Paris. In 1925 he attempted suicide.

In 1920s Korovin worked as a designer in various cabarets, he was also engaged in scene design under the guidance of his father. In particular he created costume and scene designs for the opera The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov at the private opera of M. N. Kuznetsova; the opera was staged in 1929 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Korovin also painted landscapes of Paris and its suburbs.

In 1930s–1940s he copied the late works by his father Konstantin Korovin.

In 1950 the artist committed suicide.

Alexey Korovin was under the influence of his father's art throughout his life; he tried to imitate his manner of painting. As a consequence of this, there is a great problem with differentiation of their works. The situation is aggravated by the fact that Konstantin Korovin wished to help his son and often signed his paintings.
Works by Alexey Korovin are in many museum collections, including the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum of History and Culture in Prague, and in many private collections.
