From a family of craftsman. Studied in Vitebsk — 1-м Higher art school — State free art studios (1919-1921) Ю. М. Пена, М. З. Шагала, К. С. Малевича; in Petrograd (Leningrad) in Art-педагогическом College (1921-1924, ex. Drawing school Society for the encouragement of arts) А. Р. Эберлинга; in Vhuteine (1924-1928) А. А. Рылова in the workshop П. Н. Филонова. Member of the group "masters of analytical art" П. Н. Филонова (1927-1928); participated in the painting of the auditorium of the Leningrad House of Print.

he Lived in Leningrad (until 1931, 1957) and Moscow (1934-1941). She drew illustrations for children's books: "Living loss" Э. С. Паперной (1931), "a Special day" Е. Л. Шварца and Г. С. Дитриха (1931). Collaborated with satirical magazines "Siskin" and "Hedgehog". In 1930-1931 visited creative mission in the Urals and in Magnitogorsk.

In late 1931, he was arrested on charges of "libeling the artists of the revolution" and sentenced to 3 годам links. The link was serving in Kursk and Borisoglebsk; met with poets Д. Хармсом, А. И. Введенским. Together with the artist Б. М. Эрбштейном studied design Museum and musical Comedy theatre in Borisoglebsk. In 1934 he was released on a petition И. И. Бродского soon he moved to Moscow. In 1941, a volunteer went to the front, was soon discharged for health reasons. Together with a group of Moscow artists evacuated to Siberia (Novosibirsk, Tomsk). Collaborated in the "Windows TASS", in the military newspaper "the Star" (1943). He performed sketches of costumes and scenery for productions of Belarusian Jewish theatre (Belgoset; during the evacuation of the theatre in Novosibirsk and Tomsk): "Bach-Кохба" on the play Ш. Галкина, "the Enchanted tailor" the play by Sholom-Алейхема (both — 1942).

In 1956 he was freed, he settled in Leningrad.

Created easel paintings and graphic works: "the Exhibition on the farm" (1961), "the Machinist of a diesel locomotive Н. Горбачев" (1969), "the Warsaw ghetto" (1969), "old Vitebsk" (1971), "Sholom-Алейхему", "Jewish dance", "Saturday" (all — 1973), "Vitebsk" (1975), "Napoleon in Vitebsk" (1977), "Morning prayer" (late 1970-х), "Reading the Torah" (1986); series — "Way of life" (1950-е), "Portraits of theatrical figures of Leningrad" (1960-1962), "I hate fascism" (1961-1962, tempera, gouache, oil), "Portraits of installers-высотников" (1963-1964), "Chagall in Vitebsk" (1974), "Holidays", "Michelangelo", "Rembrandt", "Filonov", "Malevich", "Beethoven", Mozart (all — 1960-70-е). Was friends with Д. Д. Шостаковичем, Э. П. Гариным.

From 1926 — participated in exhibitions. Member of mosskh (1934). Exhibited: the exhibition-смотре of young artists (1936), the all-Union exhibition of young artists dedicated to the 20-летию the Komsomol (1939), 6-й exhibition of mossh (1939), "Young artists of the RSFSR" (1941), 3-й exhibition of watercolours by Moscow artists (1957) in Moscow; traveling exhibition of works by Moscow and Leningrad artists along the Volga region (1940; Moscow, Gorky, Kazan, Kuibyshev, Saratov, Volgograd, Astrakhan); "Artists of Siberia in the days of the great Patriotic war" (1942), "Siberia — front" (1944), the Siberian inter-regional art exhibition (1947) in Novosibirsk; of works by Leningrad artists (1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1970), portrait (1959) in Leningrad and others. His personal exhibitions were held in Leningrad (1926, 1929-1930, 1973, 1987, 1988), London (1965), new-Йорке, Washington, Cleveland, Los-Анджелесе, Philadelphia (1972).

Memorial solo exhibitions were held in Vitebsk (2006, timed to 100-летию birthday), Riga (2008).

Work is represented in several Museum collections, among them — of the State Russian Museum, State Museum of history St.-Петербурга, the State Museum of the history of religion in St.-Петербурге, Vitebsk art Museum, Pskov state United historical-архитектурный and art Museum-заповедник, Museum "Creativity and everyday life in the Gulag" of the international society "memorial".
