From a merchant family; brother architects Leonid and Alexander Vesnina. He studied at the Institute of civil engineers in St. Petersburg (1901-1912, with a break). Parallel to painting under the guidance of Я. Ф. Ционглинского.

About 1905 with his brothers returned to Moscow; worked in various architectural studios as an assistant architect, in particular Р. И. Клейна during the construction of the Museum of fine arts on Volkhonka street. Studied painting and drawing at К. Ф. Юона. Closer to В. Е. Татлиным; together with his brothers organized a creative workshop in her apartment.

In 1925-1928 he worked on designing and building of the Central Institute of mineral raw materials in Zamoskvorechye (CIMS). In 1929 led the competition design of the plant (together with Н. Я. Колли, Г. М. Орловым, С. Г. Андриевским); in 1927-1932 — chief architect of the Dnieper. In the early 1930-х led the development of the city of Zaporozhye near the Dnieper (was destroyed during the war). Participated in the creation of the General plan of reconstruction of Moscow.

member of the Association of modern architects (OSA, 1925); collaborated in the magazine "Modern architecture". Member and first Chairman of the Union of Soviet architects (FSA, 1932). The first President of the Academy of architecture of the USSR (1938-1949). Member of the Academy of architecture of the USSR (1939), Academy of Sciences of the USSR (with 1943).

in Addition to the architectural work, was engaged in easel graphics. Executed portraits, landscapes. The author of a series of portraits of the Altai women (1930-е).
