Johann Friedrich Groot has not had as much impact on the development of Russian painting, as his brother, Georg Christoph, but still played a prominent role in the artistic life of Russia in the second half of XVIII century. He worked as an animal painter, wrote to the hunting scenes and still lifes. His works have enjoyed a deserved popularity among collectors and connoisseurs of art, decorated palaces and manor interiors. There are numerous copies of paintings by Groot, made disciples and contemporaries of the artist, which hinder the attribution of his original works.

Groot works are in many museum and private collections, including the State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery, the Museum-Reserve "Tsarskoe Selo" and others.
