Studied on courses of the Riga Society of painters-живописцев (1915), at the Drawing school of the Society for the encouragement of arts in Petrograd (1915-1917). In 1916 mobilised for military service; in the period of the October revolution were the red guards, was guarding the Smolny in Petrograd and the Kremlin in Moscow.

In 1919 seconded to continue their education at the State free art workshops — VKhUTEMAS in Moscow (1919-1922), he studied under the guidance П. П. Кончаловского.

he Lived in Moscow. Member of the Latvian cultural-просветительского society "Prometheus" (1919). Designed productions in the New Latvian theatre in St. Petersburg ("Golden horse" Я. Райниса, 1915) and "Skatuve" the society "Prometheus" in Moscow ("blow, wind" Я. Райниса, 1927; "Fault" Б. А. Лавренева, 1933). In 1923 and 1924 he visited Germany; has created a series of drawings "Views of Berlin" (1924). In 1930-х worked on contracts with Messham. Repeatedly made creative trip around the USSR: visited Uzbekistan (1929), Dagestan (1931), Kazakhstan (1934). Created a series of drawings "the Caucasus" (1934).

Performed a thematic picture, portrait painter, landscape painter. Author paintings: "portrait of a net" (1923), "Lada" (1925), "Portrait of the artist's wife" (1926), "Latvian Riflemen under the Eagle in 1919 году" (1928), "In a coal mine" (1928), "Portrait Я. Ф. Фабрициуса" (1928), "Samarkand. Old town. On Registan" (1929), "blast Furnace No. 5" (1930), "Saturday industrialization in the port of Leningrad" (1931), "Nizhniy Tagil. In the quarry" (1932), "Kazakhstan. Karaganda. Drilling in the desert" (1934), "On the Oka river. Quay" (1934); "Red army at the cotton harvest", "the crossing of the Dnieper Latvian parts from Kakhovka. 1920 год" (early 1930-х); series "On Sparrow hills" (1934). He worked as a poster artist; the author of the poster: "the Construction industry requires highly qualified personnel" (1930).

From 1918 — participant of exhibitions (5-ая Public exhibition of paintings in Moscow). Member of Association "Genesis" (1925-1928), AHRR — akhr (1928). Participated in exhibitions: 1-й (1925; Moscow, Saratov, Volgograd, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod) and 3-й (1931, Sverdlovsk, Magnitogorsk, Omsk, Alma-Ата, Tashkent, Samarkand and others) State traveling exhibitions organized by the arts sector of the RSFSR people's Commissariat in the cities of the RSFSR and Union Republics; Art exhibition of paintings by contemporary local and Moscow painters (1925), XXI exhibition of paintings, dedicated to the heroes of labor, the drummers sotsstroitelstva and the third, decisive year of the five-year plan (1931) in Ryazan,;, "Red Army in Soviet art, Socialist construction in Soviet art" (both — 1930), reporting of works by artists, seconded to the regions of the industrial building and collective farms (1931), anti-imperialist exhibition dedicated to International Red day (1931), Spring exhibition of Moscow artists (1935) in Moscow; "Artists of the RSFSR for XV years" (1932-1933) in Leningrad and Moscow; traveling exhibition of paintings, drawings and graphics of Moscow artists in Kharkov (1932); "XV years of the red army" (1934-1935) in Leningrad, Kiev, Kharkov. Held a personal exhibition in Moscow (1935).

he was arrested on the night of 16 на 17 января 1938 on charges of belonging to a counter-revolutionary fascist terrorist organization; later executed by shooting at the Butovo firing range. In 1956 he was posthumously rehabilitated.

Work is represented in several Museum collections, among them — Latvian art Museum in Riga, the Tretyakov gallery in Moscow, Rybinsk state historical-архитектурный and art Museum reserve.
